Wild
Horses of W.A.
Since
2006, we have had the pleasure of being involved with the
Outback Heritage Horse Association of Western Australia, handling
and starting some of their rescued wild horses, and we are
also members of the OHHAWA. We encourage anyone who has an
interest in these horses, and horses in general, to become
a member of this very worthwhile Association.
We
were originally contacted by Dr Sheila Greenwell in 2006 about
helping train some of the recently rescued Gunnadorrah horses
from Gunnedorrah Station, east of Kalgoorlie. We immediately
accepted and Fred started handling 2 of them: Ricco, a solid
black colt, and Mocha, a Skewbald Pinto gelding. The first
hour of training with these guys was a little ’hairy’
to say the least, but once they understood that we meant them
no harm they responded amazingly well, showing a wonderful,
kind and willing temperament.
To date, Fred has started 13 of the Gunnadorah Station horses
and all have shown an incredible temperament and trainability,
and have gone on to be very useful, much loved horses. We
actually decided to keep one for ourselves, Fred having fallen
in love with our D.J. (Desert Jewel) when initially handling
her. Read
about D.J’s story here
Over the last 2 years, Fred has also worked with horses from
Mt Welcome Station, Theda Station, Mt Weld Station, Prenti
Downs Station and Earaheedy Station. We have an incredible
amount of love and respect for these hardy wild horses and
actively promote them as being suitable horses for every discipline.
Please have a look at our 'Gallery'
section to see some photos of these beautiful horses.
Fred
is so grateful for the opportunity to work with these horses,
as it has taught him so much. They are his favourite type
of horse to work with and by far the most rewarding, given
their often harsh and traumatic background.
